About Savings Roast

What this is, how the math works, and why there's a roast involved.

What is this?

Savings Roast is a free calculator that answers one uncomfortable question: how long will your savings actually last?

You enter three numbers — your current savings, your monthly spending, and your monthly income. The calculator tells you your net monthly burn rate, how many months of runway you have left, and the exact month your money runs out if nothing changes.

Then it gives you a spending nickname, a short roast, and three practical tips — because honest feedback lands better when it's at least a little funny.

The whole thing takes 30 seconds. No account. No email required. Your numbers never leave your browser.

How the calculation works

The math is intentionally simple. There are two steps:

Step 1: Monthly Spending − Monthly Income = Burn Rate

This is how much your savings shrink each month.

Step 2: Savings ÷ Burn Rate = Months of Runway

This is how long your savings last at the current rate.

If your income covers your spending (burn rate is zero or negative), your savings are stable. We flag this as a good outcome — your savings are protected at current levels.

We intentionally keep the calculation simple. We do not factor in inflation, investment returns, tax changes, or life events. Those variables matter in long-term planning, but they make the output harder to understand and act on. This tool gives you a clear baseline: if nothing changes, here is what happens. That alone is useful enough to act on.

Three modes, one number

Before calculating, you choose how you want the result delivered. There are three modes:

🔥 Roast Me

Shows a short piece of comedic writing based on your financial tier. The roast comments on the situation, never your worth or intelligence. Honest feedback lands better when it’s at least a little funny.

💡 Coach Me

Skips the roast entirely and goes straight to three practical tips tailored to your tier. No jokes, just useful starting points you can act on today.

🔥💡 Roast + Coach

Shows both. The roast makes the result memorable; the tips make it useful. This is the default mode and the one most people leave it on.

Every roast follows one rule: it comments on the habit or situation, never the person’s worth, intelligence, or circumstances. Nobody chooses to struggle financially. The roast is always punching at behaviour, something that can change, not identity.

Who built this?

DJ

DJ

Cybersecurity Engineer & Software Developer

Builder of Savings Roast. Passionate about personal finance, clean tools, and making honest numbers accessible to everyone.

Savings Roast was built by DJ, a Cybersecurity Engineer and Software Developer with a passion for building tools that are honest, fast, and respect user privacy. The idea came from a familiar frustration: most personal finance calculators are either buried in complexity, require you to hand over your bank login, or wrap a simple number in so much cheerfulness that the result loses all meaning.

The privacy-first design (your numbers never leave your browser, no account required, no server ever sees your data) comes directly from a security engineering background. If the tool does not need your data to work, it should not collect it. Full stop.

The goal was a single honest question answered in under a minute: how long will my money actually last? The roast was added because honest financial feedback tends to land better when it stings slightly less.

All guides on this site are written and reviewed by DJ against established personal finance principles before publication. Content is updated when rate environments or benchmarks shift. Got a question, a bug report, or a roast line suggestion? Reach out at hello@savingsroast.com.

Editorial standards

Every piece of content on Savings Roast is written to be accurate, practical, and free from conflicts of interest. We do not accept paid placements, affiliate commissions, or sponsored content. Advertisements are served by Google AdSense and are editorially independent from the calculator and guides.

This site is a YMYL (Your Money, Your Life) resource. We take that responsibility seriously: every tip is drawn from established personal finance principles, every disclaimer is written to be honest rather than just legal, and any content that could be misapplied is clearly labelled as general guidance rather than advice for your specific situation.

If you spot an error, outdated figure, or something that could be better explained, please contact us. We read every message.

Not financial advice

Savings Roast is for general estimation and informational purposes only. The calculation is simple arithmetic based on the numbers you enter. It does not account for inflation, investment returns, tax implications, changes in income, unexpected expenses, or any other variable that real financial planning involves.

The tips are general guidance, not personalised recommendations. The roast is a joke.

If you are concerned about your financial situation — especially if your runway is very short — please speak to a qualified financial advisor. Many offer free initial consultations, and a real conversation with a professional will always be more useful than a calculator.
