What the calculator does
The tool calculates one estimate: how long a given amount of savings would last if monthly spending and income stayed constant. The formula is:
Savings ÷ (Monthly Spending − Monthly Income) = Months of Runway
If income covers spending, the result is flagged as indefinite at current levels.
That is the entire scope of the calculation. It gives you a clear baseline (if nothing changes, this is roughly what happens), which is a useful starting point, not a complete financial picture.
What the calculator does not do
The calculation intentionally excludes factors that would make the output harder to understand and act on. It does not account for:
- Inflation: the real purchasing power of your savings changes over time
- Investment returns: savings in investment accounts grow or shrink with markets
- Tax implications: income, withdrawals, and interest may have tax consequences
- Variable income or spending: the tool assumes fixed monthly amounts; real life fluctuates
- Debt obligations: loan repayments, credit card balances, and interest are not factored in
- Irregular or one-off expenses: a car repair, medical bill, or large purchase changes the picture
- Future income changes: a job loss, promotion, or career change would alter the result entirely
These factors can make the actual outcome significantly different from what the calculator shows. Use the result as a directional estimate, not a forecast.
The roast is a joke
The “roast” generated by the tool is a piece of comedic writing based on your financial tier. It is designed to make the result more engaging and memorable, not to judge you, mock your circumstances, or diagnose your financial health.
Every roast follows one rule: it comments on a habit or situation, never on the person’s worth, intelligence, or life choices. Nobody chooses financial difficulty. If a roast lands badly, please disregard it. The numbers are what matter.
